This Encuentro will take place in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at Las Puertas, March 18, 19 & 20, 2011. Those of you who came to the Albuquerque Tango Festival last November may already be familiar with Las Puertas. Las Puertas is a storage warehouse for hundreds of antique Indonesian and Asian doors and windows. Since the festival last November, the owner has installed a new dance floor to make Las Puertas a permanent dance venue.
The Encuentro will start on Friday, March 18th with an advanced level workshop, and be followed by a welcome milonga.
Saturday will start with a late morning buffet brunch to bring us all together for friendship and peer exchange off the dance floor. The Saturday workshop will be a Master level class, followed by a coaching session open to all workshop registrants. The Saturday night milonga will be open to the public so we can mingle with Albuquerque and Santa Fe local dancers that might be interested in learning Milonguero Style and experiencing a milonga with Buenos Aires style seating and the use of códigos.
Sunday we will have another Master level workshop, and another coaching session open to all registrants. The Sunday night milonga will be open only to Encuentro registrants.
Coaching sessions are similar to a casual afternoon milonga or a guided practica. These will have DJed music and while we dance, Alicia Pons will observe and pull couples to the center to give them tips to improve their dance. Periodically, we will all stop the music and dancing and share what we have learned.
There are several hotels less than a mile from the venue. Here is a Google Maps list of the nearby hotels. Your best bet is probably Quality Inn & Suites, it is half a mile from Las Puertas and about $55/night.
The workshop/brunch portion of the Encuentro is limited to 60 attendees (30 leaders, 30 followers), so we anticipate the event will sell out quickly. Early bird pricing will expire February 1st so register today!
